BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – The National Merit Scholarship Program recently announced the list of semifinalists for its 2018 scholarships. Central Mountain seniors, Raahi Chapla and Matthew Schubach are two of the 16,000 students nationwide to be selected.

Raahi Chapla plans to become a medical doctor after graduating from CMHS. He “gives a shout out to Khan Academy for helping him prepare for the PSAT testing.” Matthew Schubach will be attending Penn State University to study chemical engineering with plans to go on to graduate school to become a researcher.

“I could not be prouder of these two students” said CMHS Principal Steve Turchetta. “To have two semifinalists from Central Mountain for this prestigious award is an honor.”

Each year, over 1.6 million students vie to earn one of the coveted awards. The NMS Program commends the top 50,000 students who score the highest on the PSAT/NMSQT. The student’s responses to items on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet that are specific to NMSC program entry determine whether the individual meets requirements to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In early September, about 16,000 students are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. All winners of Merit Scholarship awards (Merit Scholar designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments—without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leaders

hip, and the Finalist’s own essay. Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, NMSC notifies approximately 7,500 Finalists at their home addresses that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship award. Merit Scholarship awards are of three types: National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards. Merit Scholarship awards are supported by some 420 independent sponsors and by NMSC’s own funds. Sponsor organizations include corporations and businesses, company foundations, professional associations, and colleges and universities.
