Wildcats Tune Up for D6 Team Duals with 50-15 Win over Bellefonte

FARWELL – Central Mountain wrestling coach Biff Walizer likes the progression his team has made through a so far 12-1 dual meet season and hopes that carries over to a successful performance at the District 6 Team Duals at Tyrone this Saturday.

The Wildcats warmed up with a 50-15 takedown of Bellefonte (9-5) in a Monday dual meet staged at Bucktail High School in recognition of the Bucktail students participating in the CM program.

Central Mountain led from start to finish, taking 10 of the 14 bouts, including six by falls. Coach Walizer expressed overall satisfaction with the team’s performance but said some of his wrestlers were lacking in “finishing up” their bouts, mistakes he said they can’t make in moving forward.

Walizer, who teaches as Bucktail, said the dual meet wrestled before a filled Dale Florey Gymnasium was a nice opportunity for the team members from Bucktail to wrestle in their home gym. Those Bucks/Wildcats went two-for-three: the dual started at 145 pounds and senior Logan Long (22-6) racked up the first of the six Wildcat pins; freshman Gage Sutliff (4-3) won a 12-4 major decision at 182 pounds and junior Tanner Riggle (12-14) fell to the Raiders’ top wrestler, Max Mondy (19-6), by a 3-0 score. The fourth Bucktail student on the Wildcat roster is junior Ben Probert, a back-up middleweight in his first year in the sport.

Other pins for the Wildcats were recorded by Asher Corl (21-6), Tanner Weaver (24-4), Jake Edwards (21-4), Jason Rinker (8-3) and Johnny Shreffler (16-10). Mahlik Houtz (15-7) had a major decision and Seth Andrus (24-3) and Cody Coleman (18-8) had regular decisions.

The Wildcats had an 18-6 edge in takedowns. The junior high squad stayed undefeated, downing Bellefonte by a 73-6 score. Several Bucktail students participate on the junior high squad.

The District 6 dual tourney is scheduled for an approximate 2 p.m. start Saturday at the Tyrone High School gym. The Wildcats, the No. 2 seed, will meet No. 3 Mifflin County ((9-5) in one semifinal while Bellefonte, the four seed, draws top seed Bald Eagle Area (13-0). Winners will meet for the district dual title and a spot in the PIAA Team Duals championships at the Giant Center in Hershey Feb. 8-10.

The Wildcats fell to BEA by a 39-33 score on Dec. 22 and own two wins over Mifflin County, the scores 41-21 and 40-24. BEA defeated Bellefonte by 42-35 on Jan. 4.
