Dr. Michael R. ‘Mickey’ Greenberg – Obituary
Michael R. Greenberg MD, MBA, age 72, known to his friends as “Mickey”, passed away suddenly on the 24th of January, 2018. Dr. Greenberg is survived by his wife Cindy (Douty) Greenberg and two step-children; Adam Douty and wife, Megan, and Alyssa Douty.
A lifelong resident of Clinton County, Dr. Greenberg will be remembered as a benevolent, compassionate physician, master of the art and science of medicine, who was committed to caring for the residents of Clinton County for over 47 years. The son of Helen (Wojtowicz) and Eddie Greenberg of Lock Haven, Dr. Greenberg graduated from Lock Haven High in 1963 where his early passion for the coronet and jazz music led to his own jazz band in high school and continuing to be a featured coronet player throughout his life. Dr. Greenberg attended Penn State University, graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1969, and completed a surgical internship at York Hospital. Dr. Greenberg attended the CERAN Language institute in Belgium earning a certificate in French communication and attended the prestigious Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania where he earned an Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1989.
Dr. Greenberg was a veteran of the Pennsylvania National Guard serving as a medical corps officer. He received a meritorious service award and achieved the rank of Major. Becoming a
pilot at an early age Dr. Greenberg was an avid aviator and flight medical examiner throughout his career.
Returning to Lock Haven, he was employed in the Emergency Department of Lock Haven Hospital before joining practice with Dr. Richard Clover and ultimately building a 19 provider multi-specialty practice in Lamar, Lock Haven, Renovo, and Avis known as Clinton Association of Physicians and Surgeons (CAPS) where Dr. Greenberg both practiced and served as the medical director. Dr. Greenberg served on the medical staff of Lock Haven, Jersey Shore and Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospitals and held numerous medical staff leadership positions over the years. Dr. Greenberg also acted as the Medical Director of the Lock Haven University Infirmary, Clinton County Correctional Facility (1994 to 2012), and the Centre County Correctional Facility.
Recognized as a national leader in healthcare innovation, Dr. Greenberg was a member of the American College of Physician Executives, American College of Medical Practice Executives and served on the executive committee of the Medical Group Management Association. Dr. Greenberg became an early advocate for the use of physician assistants and nurse midwives to improve access to care in rural and underserved communities. Having hired two of the first physician assistants in Pennsylvania, he published numerous articles on outcomes achieved through implantation of these new professionals. This early adoption also spearheaded Dr. Greenberg’s involvement with the inception, development, and implementation of the nationally recognized physician assistant program at Lock Haven University. Dr. Greenberg served as the medical director of the PA program since its inception. Dr. Greenberg served two terms as a Commissioner, and as the Treasurer of, the Accreditation Review Commission on the Education of Physician Assistants (ARC-PA), the national body responsible for accrediting all U.S. physician assistant programs.
Dr. Greenberg was an avid philanthropist providing support to both Lock Haven University and National Public Radio.
A future memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family. Donations in memory of Dr. Greenberg can be made to Clinton County SPCA.
