Central Mountain Clobbers ‘Shore, 64-11

William and Anna Holland Wrestling Room Naming Ceremony Held

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Central Mountain head wrestling coach Biff Walizer said his team had one of its better practices on Wednesday and carried it over to Thursday’s home dual meet, a 64-11 trouncing of downriver rival Jersey Shore.

The Wildcats took 12 of the 14 bouts, piling up five falls, three forfeits, two major decisions and one technical fall and one regular decision in moving to 3-1 on the season.

Walizer said his team at this stage is “a work in progress” and he hopes to have his squad where he wants it when the district team duals roll around in another month. Next Wildcat match will be home next Tuesday, Jan. 9 with Midd-West, then the tests will get more difficult with Central Mountain’s first-ever participation at the Dallastown Duals set for Saturday, Jan. 13. Participants there will include Cumberland Valley and Mifflin County.

Walizer noted there were several weights where, based on Jersey Shore and Central Mountain results at last weekend’s Conestoga Valley Holiday Tourney, the Bulldogs could be seen as favorites. He particularly mentioned the showing from Wildcat 195-pound wrestler Tanner Riggle who finished two notches below ‘Shore’s David Tomb at Conestoga. Riggle (9-8) trailed Tomb 1-0 early in period two on Thursday but came back with five takedowns on the way to a 16-6 major decision.

Central Mountain’s five falls came from Austyn Carson (10-8) at 152 pounds, Tanner Weaver (15-4) at 170, Mahlik Houtz (7-6) at 220, Jake Edwards (13-3) at 285 and Seth Andrus (16-2) at 132.

The dual meet started at 138 pounds where Cody Coleman (12-6) notched a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs’ Gabe Packer in the closest bout of the night. Other winners included Logan Long (14-5) with a technical fall at 145, Alonzo Henry (1-1), filling in for the injured Asher Corl, with a major decision at 160.

Awarded forfeits were Anson Zimmerman (4-5) at 106, Johnny Shreffler (11-6) at 113 and Dalton Bechdel (12-7) at 120 pounds.

Jersey Shore got a technical fall from junior standout Hunter O’Connor at 182 pounds and a fall from Tyler Willits at 126 pounds.

The Wildcats had a 25-9 edge in takedowns. Central Mountain took the junior high match by a 42-36 score.

The dual meet was preceded by a special ceremony dedicating the team’s wrestling room to the late William Holland Jr. and his late wife Anna Holland and their family.

Holland, long-time principal at the former Lock Haven High School, was leader in PIAA wrestling. He was personally responsible for instituting wrestle-backs and more than just the two traditional place-winners at the state tournament. He had directed a number of PIAA tournaments over many years and was a former Lock Haven High School wrestler. Some 25 members of the Holland family were present for the dedication and received a standing ovation from those in attendance.

The Holland family has made a significant contribution to the Keystone Central Foundation and also provided for an annual$1,000 scholarship for a Central Mountain athlete, male or female, attending a four year college.
