Penn State Pummels Terps, 66-3

psu-footballCOLLEGE PARK, Md. – Penn State finished its regular season on a high note Saturday, scoring on four of its first five possessions and vanquishing Maryland by a 66-3 score.

The win left the Nittany Lions at 10-2 and a weeklong wait to find out its bowl game opponent. Bids will come out after league championship games next Saturday, Dec. 2. Pre-bowl speculation has varied from Miami to Notre Dame to TCU.

Maryland finished at 4-8 and was no match for Penn State which led 31-0 at halftime. Sophomore backup quarterback Tommy Stephens finished as the Nittany Lions’ leading ground-gainer with 113 yards on 12 rushes including the game’s first score, a 21-yard run; he added two more scores in the second half and threw for another touchdown.

Starter Trace McSorley played sparingly in the second half but still finished with 237 yards on 22 completions in 33 attempts. Running back Saquon Barkley, in perhaps his final regular season game, added 77 yards on 16 carries.

Penn State ended with 534 yards of offense and scored eight touchdowns in nine trips to the red zone, getting a 30-yard field goal from Tyler Davis on the other. The Nittany Lions finished with three straight one-sided wins which followed the season’s only two losses, last minute road defeats by a total of four points to Ohio State (10-2) and Michigan State (9-3).
