Seniors Roll to 60-38 Powder Puff Win

cm-footballBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It was time once again for the much anticipated gridiron challenge at Malinak Stadium … the 2017 rendition of CM Powder Puff football.

The fund raising even features female students from the current junior and senior classes trying their hand at flag football and the male class members serve as coaches and cheerleaders. The game benefits the Lady Wildcat softball and the Wildcat baseball programs.

This year it was the Seniors (Class of 2018) prevailing over the Juniors (Class of 2019) 60-38.

It took less than 4 minutes for the scoring to begin with the Seniors scoring their first TD when Josie Dershem dashed on a slanting run for the score and a 6-0 lead. The first score was set up by several solid running plays featuring Sadie McCaleb.

It didn’t take long for the Juniors to bounce bag as Hunter Barger found pay dirt in the end zone after Sloane Tressler reeled off a terrific kickoff return to set up the score.

The Seniors drove the ball into the Red Zone once more than were turned back when Tressler picked off a pass in the end zone and returned the ball for great field position for the Juniors.

Turnaround and turnovers are fair play in football and the Seniors returned the favor when Ashley Kline picked off a Junior pass to set up the Seniors once more.

This time the turnover also charged up the Senior momentum as Sadie McCaleb scored two consecutive touchdowns for the upper class.

The Juniors bounced back with another touchdown of their own when Bager scampered across the goal line for her second score of the day.

The ensuing Senior drive stalled at the Junior 19 with McCaleb connecting for a 29 yard field goal.

Then the Juniors went to work in the closing minutes of the first half as quarterback, Destiny Carter connected with wide receiver, Morgan Wetzel three times to set up another TD rushing score by Barger for the last score before halftime with the Seniors leading 34-18.

The Seniors opened the second half with a bonus play when they earned the fan loyalty contest and were allowed to attempt a field goal try for 3 points. The Mcaleb kick on the Macy Akeley hold was good and increased the Senior lead to 37-18.

The Juniors had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half which set up another Barger TD run to get things tolling for the underclass again.

Senior quarterback, Josie Derssem responded in kind connecting with wide receiver, Macy Akeley, who had a terrific run after the catch for the score.

The Junior offense stalled on their next drive and were forced to punt but their fortunes changed quickly as Tressler picked off a Senior pass and sprinted into the end zone untouched for the score.

That brief Junior success would be answered back quickly when Dershem found Akeley in the end zone for another TD reception.

Next, both teams would trade interceptions with Dyanni Pillai snaring a pick for the Seniors and Sarah Probst picking a pass off for the Juniors.

Late in the second half Barger would score the last Junior TD on a terrific 45 yard run.

McCaleb would then close out the day and the game with a quick TD score on the final play of the game and the 60-38 Senior win.

This was the second victory for the Class of 2018 and they close out their Powder Puff careers at 2-0.
