Knight Leads LHU in 62-0 Win over Cheney

lhu-footballLOCK HAVEN – True-freshman quarterback Kyle Knight (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) rushed for 181 yards and four touchdowns and the Bald Eagles defense pitched a shutout as the Lock Haven University football team (1-5, 1-2 PSAC East) picked up its first win of the 2017 season on Saturday, dropping Cheyney University (1-5, 0-3 PSAC East), 62-0.

The dominating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division win came just shy of LHU’s school-record 66 points scored last season at East Stroudsburg.

Knight got the start at quarterback and never looked back as he sparked a LHU ground-game that produced 460 total rush yards. Knight carried the ball 20 times for 181 yards and four scores. He scored on runs of 1-yard, 33-yards, 5-yards and 3-yards.

John Ford (Etters, Pa./Shippensburg Univ.) ripped off a 40-yard TD run and Corey Blakey (Philadelphia/West Catholic) scored on a 10-yard run. Blakey finished with 122 yards, while Ford ran for 93. Ralph Hyland (Philadelphia/Frankford) added 50 yards on the ground.

The 460 team rushing yards are a single-game school record.

The Bald Eagles defensive unit did more than just shut the Wolves down as the LHU defense also provided two scores of its own.

Dontae Mason (Philadelphia/Bishop McDevitt) scored after scooping a Cheyney-fumble and returning it 19-yards, and Carlos Balkcom (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) returned an interception – his second of the game – 50 yards for a TD.

LHU had three interceptions on the day as Mike Cottom (Glenside, Pa./Upper Dublin) added one.

Shyheim Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) had six tackles, and Neil Satterwhite (Philadelphia/West Catholic) finished with six stops and one sack.

Four different players had five tackles apiece for a unit that produced three sacks and nine total tackles-for-loss to go along with the four takeaways.

The Haven defense set the tone early as Balkcom’s first of two interceptions came on just the second offensive play of the game for Cheyney. Five plays later Knight dove into the end zone from 1-yard out and scored his first of three first-quarter TDs.

Lock Haven led 28-0 at halftime.

The Bald Eagles scored 20 more points in the third quarter and Tavian Dorsey (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hauled in a threaded 22-yard pass from Cameron Tobias (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) – before carrying two Cheyney defenders on his back into the end zone – to cap the game’s scoring late in the fourth.

The shutout was Lock Haven’s first since 2014 when LHU downed Cheyney on the road, 28-0.

Next Saturday, October 14 (Week 7), Lock Haven heads to Millersville University for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
