Homecoming Victory!

Wildcats End Drought with 28-14 Win over Shamokin

cm-footballBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Things were looking bleak for the Central Mountain football team as the Wildcats headed to the locker-room at halftime, trailing Shamokin 14-7 in their Friday night homecoming contest.

Not only did Central Mountain trail by a score but they were held to only 50 yards of offense through the first two quarters. It looked like the Wildcats were headed for a seventh straight loss this season.

But the second half came and the Wildcats put together their best 24 minutes of the season. They took the second half kickoff and drove 70 yards for a score, eclipsing their entire first half offensive output and tying the game at 14-14 after Tanner Weaver surged in from two yards out. The Wildcat defense forced a 3-and-out on Shamokin and got the ball back at the Indians’ 46 yard-line. It was another touchdown drive and quarterback Austyn Carson’s 1-yard run put the Wildcats up 21-14 as the third quarter ended.

Central Mountain was not done. On their third possession of the half they drove 69 yards, key plays a long Carson-to-Izzy McCann pass to the Shamokin 31, a Carson 27-yard run to the 4, and Weaver with a 1-yard run for the score. Carson’s fourth of fourth extra point tries put the Wildcats up 28-14 and when Shamokin threatened late, Asher Corl came up with an end zone interception to seal the victory.

The Wildcats, held to 50 yards in the first half, piled up 196 in the second. Shamokin had 183 yards at halftime and an aggressive Wildcat defense held the Indians to 27 in the second half. Standouts were multiple for CM, but none more than Weaver who made numerous clutch stops from his linebacker spot, in addition to running for 85 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns. Carson carried 16 times for 53 yards and two scores and completed 7 of 10 passes for 104 yards.

Carson also made two clutch stops when Shamokin offensive threat Devin Pietkiewicz took back two second half kickoffs deep into Wildcat territory; each time Carson made saving tackles at the Central Mountain 36 and 20 yard lines. Each time the Wildcat defense would keep Shamokin out of the end zone.

The win broke a 9-game losing streak for Central Mountain, now 1-6. The last win was over Shamokin a year ago. The Indians dropped to 1-6. Central Mountain will be at home next Friday night, hosting Selinsgrove (6-1). The Seals Friday night defeated Mifflinburg (1-6) by a 47-7 score.

Halftime homecoming festivities saw Josie Dershem crowned homecoming queen and Joey Moore the king.

Other scores included Sayre 28, Bucktail 14; Shikellamy 32, Jersey Shore 21; Cumberland Valley, 36, State College, 21; Delaware Valley 48, Williamsport 17.
