Heroin Overdose Spike Subsides in Williamsport; No Lock Haven Impact Seen

LOCK HAVEN — A spokesman for Lock Haven Emergency Medical Services said Friday the incidence of heroin overdose cases in the area remains normal, but at the same time acknowledging there is a drug problem in Clinton County.

His comments followed a midweek surge in the Williamsport area where UPMC Susquehanna’s Emergency department and pre-hospital service teams were deluged with emergency calls, one of which ended in death Thursday morning.

The Williamsport-based UPMC operation said yesterday officials believed there was a potentially lethal version of the drug in the region.

Today UPMC released this statement from Williamsport:
“Over the past 48 hours UPMC Susquehanna emergency and Pre-hospital Services departments have treated a total of 51 patients with heroin overdoses. We believe the situation is stabilizing in our facilities. We will provide updates as they are available and appropriate; however questions regarding the issue at large should be directed to the correct public agency or authority. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to focus on the health needs of patients.”
