Keystone Opens Playoffs with 39-0 Win at Newberry

WILLIAMSPORT — Most folks thought this year’s Keystone Major Little League team would be pretty good and the boys in blue did not disappoint in their opener, a 39-0 win over a game but overmatched Newberry team.

All 13 Keystone team members contributed one way or another in a 25-hit onslaught in a game called after four innings by the 10-run rule. While the offense ruled, the pitching was equally outstanding. Four Keystone pitchers hurled an inning each and combined on a one-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking one. Newberry did not get a ball out of the infield; the home team’s only hit a groundball in the hole in the second inning.

Matt Conklin started for Keystone and went the first inning, striking out all three batters he faced on 12 pitches. Gabe Johnson was next and struck out three of the four batters he faced, surrendering only the infield hit. Newcomer Peyton Newlen pitched a perfect third with two strikeouts and Ashton Probst pitched a scoreless fourth, giving up one walk; that runner, Daniel Confer, ended the game when he was thrown out trying to steal on a perfect peg from catcher Nate Helms to shortstop Braylen Corter.

Meanwhile Keystone teed off on three Newberry pitchers, plating 12 in the first inning, 2 in the second, 9 in the third and 16 in the top of the fourth inning that ended only when a Keystone base runner allowed himself to be tagged out.

The Keystone hitting was up and down the lineup; it included four homeruns, all in the 16-run fourth. They came from Tyler Weaver, Chase Brush, Cru Stover and Jack Hanna. Leading the hit parade was Stover with four; he had a homer, two doubles and a single and scored five times. Three hits each came from Luke Simcox, Corter with a double and two singles and Brush who just missed the cycle with his homer, a triple and a double as he scored six runs.

Hanna ended with two hits including his homer and Levi Schlesinger doubled twice and Newlen had a single and double. Other hits came from Johnson, a double; Helms, a double; Conklin, a double; Kaden Irvin, a double; and Probst, a single.

Keystone will return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Blaine Kunes Memorial Park in Beech Creek, South Williamsport the opponent.
