Southern Columbia too Much for Game Wildcats

cm-footballBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP—For one half and a few minutes into the third quarter the underdog Central Mountain Wildcats hung with small school power Southern Columbia. But a veteran Golden Tiger squad, now 9-0, had too much line strength, too much horsepower, and ultimately overran the home team by a resounding 62-7 score.

For a few fleeting moments early in the third period the Wildcats came close to making a game of it. Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Central Mountain moved quarterback Justin Neff to a receiver spot and inserted sophomore Austyn Carson at quarterback. Carson directed the Wildcats all the way to the Southern Columbia three yard line; a touchdown there would have made it a one-score game. But the drive stalled and ended when SC defensive back Steve Toczylousky picked off a Carson pass and it returned it 82 yards for a score and a 28-7 lead for the visitors.

Southern Columbia blew things open from there on out, outscoring Central Mountain 41-0 in quarters three and four. The result wasted another fine night for Neff who scored the Wildcats’ only points on a 90-yard kickoff return midway through period two (he had another 90-yarder called back on a penalty). He also completed 7-of-9 passes for 50 yards, all in the first half, Carson running the offense for the rest of the game.

Otherwise the Wildcats were dominated by the Tigers who finished the night with 489 yards of offense, compared to Central Mountain’s 156 yards. Carson was able to complete 6-of-12 passes for 114 yards but had two picked off. J.J. Harris caught eight in all for 100 yards and Tyler Zablocki got two for 67. Zablocki was honored before the game with the Sam Casilio Memorial Award for contributions to the Central Mountain football program.

The Wildcats, now 2-7, finish the season next Friday night at Jersey Shore. The 7-2 Bulldogs prepped with a 56-0 romp over Bald Eagle Area.

Other scores included: State College 21, Cumberland Valley 7; Chestnut Ridge 20, Bellefonte 14 (overtime); and Bucktail 16, Nativity 13.
