cm-soccerBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP — The Central Mountain boys’ soccer team kicks off a new season Saturday, playing host to the annual Commissioners Cup tourney at the West Branch Soccer Club grounds in Woodward Township.

And head coach Jeff Brinker believes his 2015 edition will be a competitive one. While the Wildcats took a few graduation hits, some talent returns, bolstered by a couple returnees who did not compete last season. Working with a squad of 29, Brinker says he has a good mix, resulting in a competitive team that “has to show up each night” and if so, “we should be alright.”

The squad will include two of the coach’s sons, sophomore Micah Brinker, a midfielder/forward this year and senior Daniel Brinker on the backline. Veteran defender Kline Williams returns for his senior year.

Those back out include junior Brody Baker expected to move in as the goal keep and senior Alex Garbrick, back out and likely to see time as a defender. Kevin Hook will also be a part of the starting mix as a forward.

Brinker said his squad should be strong up the middle but noted installation of a new formation, “a learning curve for the guys” that should provide more scoring opportunities. He said depth could be a problem; the team needs to avoid injuries.

This Saturday’s Commissioners Cup schedule will see the Wildcats open at 10 a.m. with Bloomsburg, then meet Huntingdon at 4:45 p.m. Selinsgrove is the fourth team in the field but will not play the Wildcats as the two teams meet in the regular season. Tourney champ will be determined on a point system.
