BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP — The two November candidates seeking to fill the Keystone Central School District Region VIII vacancy have submitted letters of interest to secure an interim appointment.

Board vice-president Butch Knauff confirmed to therecord-online that Boise Miller and Jeff Johnston met the school district filing deadline of Thursday of this week and interviews will be conducted as part of the process to find the short-term replacement for former board president Jack Peters who lost out in the May primary and resigned from the board. Johnston and Miller were the only two to seek the appointment to be determined by the remaining eight board members.

The resignation was accepted by the school board at its June 18 meeting and Region VIII residents were given until July 2 to express their interest. Knauff indicated it would be difficult to fill the vacancy by the state-set 30 day replacement time frame. He said a public notice will be advertised and interviews conducted but that process would extend beyond the board’s next scheduled meeting, Thursday, July 9. Knauff expressed the belief the local court system would not intervene if the 30-day time frame is not met as long as the district is making a good faith effort to locate a replacement.

Region VIII is comprised of Flemington borough and Bald Eagle and Castanea Townships. Johnston won the GOP nomination in May while Miller edged Johnston for the Democratic nomination, setting up the November runoff to determine a permanent replacement for Peters.
