A sign for the times …

Rumor has, not a clue if it’s true, but the rumor is that Renovo may be getting a sign that will that will be a lighted Community Bulletin board list of the events, the organizations, the churches and all kinds of other interesting information on things that are occurring or planned for the area.

Actually, the word is a committee of five or six people are exploring the idea to purchase and install an LED sign that can be operated by a laptop computer. Jim Kelley of Farwell, one of the people who have been discussing it, said a company in Florida manufactures the signs. A four by six sign with information on both sides costs about $13,000. Kelley said the signs can be programmed and operated easily with a laptop computer. It would include a clear vandal proof cover.

Kelley said the idea came to mind because some school sports games were cancelled but many people didn’t know it, and because various events were scheduled that people were not aware of until after the fact.

The current thought is that the sign could be placed at the Flaming Foliage Lot. The electricity and any other maintenance costs would not be on the FFF committee. Kelley said a Dominion spokesman said company employees would help with ground work, any pipes needed for installation and installation.

The word is that if the group gives the go-ahead to purchase and install the sign, donations will be sought from the public. Kelley said about 3,500 people belong to the I <3 Renovo website on FaceBook. He believes many of them are former residents of Renovo who would be willing to donate for the sign. “People could feel good about helping to put the sign there,” he said. Rumor has it …

Rumor has it, not a clue if it’s true, but I heard this week that the senior project requirement students in the Keystone Central schools have had to meet to graduate in recent years are going to be discontinued. As I said, I don’t have a clue if it’s true. But if it is, it will be a loss to the community. The Bucktail senior projects are the ones the Record’s Farwell corporate office hears the most about, and they have been admirable indeed. Local parks have been spruced up, painted and renovated, new and repainted school campus signs are in place and outdoor sports equipment and score boards have been erected and that’s just the tip of list of accomplishments. Mary Fecteau for instance repainted and decorated the former activity room at Bucktail Medical Center and students have provided labor for area cleanup projects and they have helped with area events such as the Hyner Challenge and the Flaming Foliage Festival. As I said the list goes on and on.

The community has certainly benefitted from the student senior projects. I believe the seniors themselves have benefitted as well. They’ve gotten first-hand experience in organization, in fund raising, funds, and in dealing with the public and numerous other everyday aspects of life after graduation.

Meeting Thursday to learn about grants …
