RENOVO — The Renovo Elks Lodge 334 is distributing almost $6,000 among 18 community organizations.

Checks will be distributed by mail to most organizations but on Sunday checks were given to representatives during a brief presentation at the Lodge on Fourth Street. The three were the Flaming Foliage Committee, $1,000; Renovo Area Public Library, $300 and the Renovo Little League, $800.

Accepting the checks were Maria Gentzyel, chairperson of the FF Committee; Zach Pick for the Renovo Little League and Charles Barnum, president of the Renovo Library Board of Directors. Patricia Chavez, Exulted Ruler of the Elks presented the checks along with Linda Stoltz, secretary and Jim Goetz, Elks Head Trustee.

In addition to the FFF Committee, the library and the Little League, checks will be given to: Western Clinton County Veterans, $200; Toys for Tots, $100; Bucktail Booster Clubs, $100; Sportsman’s Youth Pheasant Program, $200; Citizen’s Hose Co., $300; Renovo Fire Co., $300; Chapman Twp. Fire Co., $300; Renovo Community Christmas Fund, $100; Special Olympics, $150; W.C.C.R.A., $200; Renovo Heritage Park, $100; Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life, $500; Elks Home Service, $500; Elks Drug Awareness Program, $200 and Elks National Service, $200.

Stoltz said the Elks have always donated to other organizations but the presentation Sunday was the first time they’ve given in a group. “We’re a charitable organization,” she said. We usually sent all the donations through the mail.

This time, she said, the Elks wanted to let the community know they give the money. “People forget that we’re here.” The club has various events through the year, including a chicken BBQ in the summer that is open to the public and Fish Fry dinners on Friday nights during Lent. During the Flaming Foliage Festival they host the Bag Pipers and hold a Saturday night dance.

On Sunday, following the check presentation the Elks held a Memorial Service for six members who died in 2013. Through the year the Elks give an eleventh hour toast to deceased members during night time functions.
