Are You Ready for Some ‘Rasslin’ ?

cm-wrestlingTYRONE – While most of the country is all a tither anticipating Super Bowl XLIX, here in central Pennsylvania, many sports fans are on the edge of their seat ready for the potential showdown between the Mifflin County Huskies (2) and the Central Mountain Wildcats (1) in the District 6 AAA Duals Championship finals.

Be assured that all four teams involved (Bellefonte (3) and State College (4) ) will show up to compete at the highest level possible. The prize on the line is a trip to Chocolate Town to face the best the Keystone State has to offer.

Indeed, it is never wise to look ahead because Mifflin County still has to get past Bellefonte and the Wildcats have to advance over State College in the semi final round before either team can think of capturing another D6 Duals title. Though, we all know all the coaching staffs have been considering ALL possibilities for some time. Both staffs will very likely weigh in their entire rosters moving wrestlers where they could benefit their respective teams most.

Recent history indicates that the Huskies should have a edge over Bellefonte but make no mistake, Mike Maney will have the Red Raiders ready for the challenge and would love nothing more than to upset Mifflin County. Central Mountain won their Jan. 15 dual meet with Bellefonte 47-26.

For the Wildcats, there probably won’t be much change in the potential outcome for the State College vs Central Mountain semi final match, since little has changed in the past week when the Wildcats dispatched the Little Lions 62-9 on Jan. 24. Though, you can be sure the Little Lions will be seeking redemption with all their might.

Other than the regular season matchup, the only common opponent between Mifflin County and the Wildcats has been State College. The Huskies toppled SC 45-24 on Jan. 22. CM put together a convincing win over Mifflin County on the road 34-26 back on Dec. 20.

One distinct aspect is, Mifflin County has been spotting their opponents a 6-0 advantage since they have not had anyone to compete at 106. Opposing teams can’t take that advantage too seriously because in the other 13 weight classes, the Huskies don’t offer an easy path. Wins over Mifflin County have to be earned. The Huskies will leave it all on the mat as they know well the sting of a loss in the finals.

All that said, Wildcat coach, Doug Buckwalter will have his squad ready and prepared for every possible matchup. He knows the margin of victory at the district duals can be the slimmest possible considering the Wildcats narrowly edged Mifflin County by a single point only a year ago (CM – 26, MC – 25) that came down to a must-win by at least a technical fall in the closing seconds of the last weight class. That’s as close as it gets. Once they toe the line, it’s up to the wrestlers to settle their fate. Anything can … and does happen. Nothing can be taken for granted.

Buckwalter has the good fortune of having many options to move his lineup as he needs to offer his squad an advantage. Depending upon the coin toss and the starting weight class, Bucky will most assuredly make the moves required and his wrestlers will respond in kind, never wavering in the effort.

So, if you are a fan of wrestling, Tyrone High School is your destination Sat., Jan. 31 with the semifinal round starting at 5 p.m. and the championship final match to follow. It won’t be the Super Bowl, but it will cost much less and offer an equal amount of action and excitement. We hope to see you there.

We will update the results on therecord-online.com after each weight class is finished.

You can also listen to the action live on WBPZ 1230 AM or online at www.wsqvradio.com or on TuneIn Radio on your mobile device.
