Morgan New Clinton County All-Time Scoring Leader

bucks-basketballFARWELL — As the 2014-15 basketball season unfolded, the question became not would Maria Morgan become Clinton County’s top scoring basketball player but rather when that historic event would take place.

The answer came Tuesday night on the Bucktail Lady Buck senior’s home court at Farwell. Morgan went into the contest against Muncy needing 19 points to eclipse the county scoring record, 2,118 points, set 20 years ago by Lock Haven High star Jessica Zinobile.

The Buck guard hit early and often, despite a strenuous defensive effort from Muncy. Morgan had 11 points after one period, adding a 2-point field goal and a 3-pointer midway into period two. Then it happened. The record-breaker came as her points often do, off a Morgan steal; she stole the ball, drove the length of the court, fouled as she hit a 2-point layup to reach 2,118, this at the 3:35 mark of the period. She calmly followed the two with a swished foul shot, her point total at 2,119, an amount more than any Clinton County high school player, male or female, in over a century of basketball.

The game was halted briefly as Bucktail Principal Betsy Dickey lauded Morgan’s effort and Morgan thanked her teammates and the large crowd who turned out for the special night.
The game resumed and Muncy offered a stiff challenge. But each time the Indians did, Morgan and her teammates answered, ultimately winning by a 71-58 score. Morgan would finish the night with 44 points, tying her single-game career high.

The win put Bucktail at 10-4 on the season and enhanced the Lady Buck hopes for a better seed when District 4 playoffs get underway next month.

But Tuesday night was Maria Morgan’s night. She held up her end of the deal with a superlative all-around game of basketball and an appreciative home audience roared in delight.
