Wildcats Claim 36-24 Road Win over Mifflin County

cm-wrestlingHIGHLAND PARK — Their December slate complete, the Central Mountain wrestlers have established themselves as the frontrunner among District 6 AAA dual meet teams.

They did so Saturday night with a hard-earned 36-24 win over home-standing Mifflin County (5-2).

The Wildcats did it with pins, three in all, and victories in a couple weights seen as toss-ups going in. But it wasn’t easy.

Central Mountain jumped to a 15-5 lead after the first five weights (the dual started at 106 pounds). The first key bout win for the Wildcats came at 132 pounds where sophomore Colton Weaver moved to 9-5 on the season with a 7-0 win over Husky freshman Logan Wise (7-3).

Then Mifflin County’s talented middleweights kicked in, the Huskies going on a 4-bout run to take the lead for the first time, 21-15 after 160 pounds. It didn’t last long.

Senior Gavin Caprio (12-1) picked up his 99th career win with a pin in 1:35 over Mike Bielski, tying the score at 21-all after 170 pounds.

Junior Isaac Porter (7-3) was solid at 182 in regaining the lead, securing a workmanlike 6-1 win over Mifflin County veteran Keith Corson (7-5), almost pinning the Husky senior in the final period. For Porter it was his final appearance for several weeks, scheduled for knee surgery on Monday of next week.

Porter’s win put Central Mountain back up at 24-21 but Mifflin County’s defending regional champ Trey Hartsock (10-2) tied things back up when he decisioned Loc Long (9-4) by a 9-3 score, team score 24-24 with two bouts to go.

But two first period falls in the final two weights sent the Wildcats home a winner. First up was Hunter Weaver, the Central Mountain wrestler going out at 220 pounds, despite weighing in at 185 pounds. Weaver (8-4) wasted no time, taking down and pinning Wyatt Renninger (3-6) in 28 seconds.

Bryce Hanley (12-3) followed with a fall in 1:33 over Husky heavy Gavin Erb (0-4), putting the final at 36-24 and establishing Central Mountain as the team to beat when the district dual meet tourney comes around Jan. 31.

Other Wildcat winners were Geo Barzona (9-3) by forfeit at 106, Seth Andrus (9-4) by a 3-0 decision at 113 and Keanan Bottorf (10-4) by 6-4 at 126 pounds.

Central Mountain, now 3-0, will be off until Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Williamsport, followed by a home meet with Mifflinburg Thursday, Jan. 8 and a Saturday, Jan 10, 2 p.m. contest against Bald Eagle Area, the meet to be wrestled at Bucktail High School, home school for Wildcat 160-pounder Demetri Probst (11-4).
