LHU Wrestling Adds Weikel to Staff

Central Mountain Seeks New Assistant; Walizer reported interested

lhu-matsLOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven University wrestling team has added Rob Weikel to the staff as an assistant coach and that means the Central Mountain High School program is seeking a new assistant.

Weikel, a 2001 graduate of LHU, earning a degree in Health and Physical Education. He is also a former Bald Eagle wrestler.

LHU second-year head coach Scott Moore lauded the addition of Weikel, who has deep roots in Central Pennsylvania wrestling.

”Weikel will be a great asset to our program in many ways and will serve as a great role model, and technician for our wrestlers moving forward,” Moore said. “As a Lock Haven alum, he understands the potential of this program and will do his part in bringing back the strong tradition of Mat-Town USA.”

Weikel’s departure as first assistant at Central Mountain means that program is looking for a replacement to assist longtime head coach Doug Buckwalter.

While the high school has made no formal announcement on the status of a new hire, The Record has learned that former Bald Eagle-Nittany/Penn State standout Biff Walizer has expressed interest in the opening.

Walizer recently returned to Clinton County and currently is a teacher at Bucktail High School. A winner of two PIAA wrestling titles at BEN, Walizer was an All-American at Penn State, later coached at Red Lion High School and most recently was an assistant at Millersville University. He also briefly was involved in Mix Martial Arts fighting while at Red Lion.

Weikel was a three-year starter for the Bald Eagles. Prior to LHU, he was a standout at Bellefonte High School. While competing at Bellefonte he was a three-time District Six Champion, two-time Regional Champion, PIAA silver medalist and Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic participant.

Weikel is looking forward to returning the mats of his alma mater.

”I couldn’t be more excited to help build the tradition at Lock Haven,” said Weikel.  “The coaching staff, administration and student-athletes have made it an easy transition for me. I have been fortunate to go from one great program in Central Mountain, to another at LHU. This area thrives on great wrestling and that is why it is such a special place to wrestle and coach.”
