Keystone Intermediate All-Stars ‘Go Yard’ for 14-4 Win over CT

COMMACK, NY – The Keystone Intermediate 50/70 All-Stars returned to form today by beating Coginhaug Little League, the Connecticut state champions 14-4 in Eastern Regional play.

Bouncing back from a 5-1 loss to New Jersey yesterday, eight Keystone batters produced 13 hits in their win over Coginhaug.

Blade Myers led off for Keystone in the top of the first inning with a ground ball, reaching safely on a CT error. Cayde MCCLoskey followed with a blast over the right field fence for a 2-run homer to start the scoring.

Then, in the words of Yogi Berra, “It was Déjà vu all over again,” when Kaden Falls reached first base on another CT error and Aiden Major followed Falls with a 2-run dinger to center field to put Keystone up 4-0.

In the fourth inning, Keystone tacked on 3 more runs that came from a solo homer from Lane Porter, and another 2-run dinger from McCloskey.

Then in the top of the sixth inning the flood gates opened for the Keystone bats as they plated 7 more runs … with 2 outs on the board.

Myers and McCloskey got Keystone rolling in the sixth inning with back-to-back solo homers, then a double from Falls and a single from Major gave Keystone a 10-0 lead.

Then Brady Bendik singled, followed by a 2-run shot that cleared the fence from Ryan Thompson. Then Kayden Friese went yard for a solo homer to close out the scoring for a 14-0 advantage for Keystone.

Coginhaug would mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring 4 runs in an effort that would fall short with the game concluding under the 10-run rule.

It was a pitch-by-committe effort for Keystone to keep the individual pitch counts low in order to have as many arms available for battling back in the lower bracket of the tournament.

McCloskey was the starter for Keystone striking out 3 and allowing 1 hit in 2 innings on the mound. Falls came in next striking out five of the six batters he faced over two innings. Thompson pitched one inning walking 2 and striking out one batter. Then Braedon Confair worked the first two outs of the sixth inning giving up 1 hit, 1 walk and striking out 2. Friese came in for the last out, yielding 1 hit in the effort.

Keystone will play next on Monday July 24 at 2 p.m. against Easthampton LL, the Massachusetts state champion.
