HARRISBURG – State Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Clinton/Centre, announced today that volunteer fire departments and emergency medical service companies in the 76th Legislative District have been awarded grants totaling $310,519.81.

The grants are part of a $30 million Fire Company/Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program available to fire and volunteer ambulance companies who applied for the funds and administered by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC).

“It is most gratifying to see our first responders – who give so much time and effort to their communities – be awarded this financial assistance,” Hanna said. “These organizations embody community safety and are huge assets to all Pennsylvania communities.”

Hanna said the funding comes from an annual grant program created in 2000 by the legislature and funded by gaming revenue.

“The grants can be used toward repairing, building or renovating facilities,” Hanna said. “The money also can be applied toward the purchase of new equipment, training and certification of staff, or it may go to repay debt related to equipment purchases or facility building and maintenance.

“When it comes to supporting our first responders, the money and the program are a godsend.”

While these companies started the application process many months ago, it is important for applicants to take the next step and access their grant agreement forms.  Once returned and reviewed by the OSFC, the money will be disbursed.

“I encourage any fire or EMS organization that needs help completing the necessary grant agreement to please call or stop in either my Lock Haven or Milesburg offices,” Hanna said. “My staff would be happy to assist you.”
