Pin Power and Newcomers Lead Wildcats over Seals, 50-21

cm-wrestlingSELINSGROVE – The Central Mountain wrestling team not only has balance and bonus point ability, the Wildcats displayed some depth in Wednesday night’s 50-21 dual meet win at Selinsgrove.

With starters Colton Weaver and Asher Corl missing for minor reasons of health, coach Biff Walizer called on two varsity newcomers to step in as replacements. With the dual starting at Weaver’s slot at 145 pounds first-time starters Logan Soo and Alonzo Henry (at 152 pounds) were the first two Wildcats on the mat and both came through big time.

Soo, a junior who had last wrestled in junior high school, began the meet at 145 and responded with a 5-2 win to start the Central Mountain onslaught. Next up, at 152 pounds, was the sophomore Henry up from last year’s junior high team; he piled up a 7-0 lead before recording a fall in 3:25 and the rout was on.

“Logan Soo hasn’t wrestled since eighth grade, I know he had some nerves going before he went out there,” said CM head coach Biff Walizer, “He gave up the first takedown but he kept fighting and gutted one out for the win.”

“Alonzo stepped in at 152 and really got after it and kept working until he got the fall,” explained Walizer, “The work these guys put in in the room every night as backups really pays off. We called on them and they stepped up.”

Before the night was over Central Mountain racked up seven falls and a 26-11 technical fall from Geo Barzona in 5:29, the undefeated Wildcat senior piling up what is believed to be a single match school record for takedowns with 13.

First period pins came from Caleb Turner, Richie Thompson and Johnny Shreffler. Second period falls were recorded by Cody Coleman, Logan Long (a team-leading fifth) and Brandon Miller, along with Henry.

The dual meet was the first for both teams. Central Mountain also took the junior high meet by a 76-14 score, the juniors 6-0 on the young season.

Next up Central Mountain will host its own King of the Mountain tourney scheduled for a 2 p.m. start Friday. The event is to run through late Saturday afternoon but tournament officials said due to the threat of bad weather Saturday, the schedule will likely be altered, the quarterfinals switched from 10 a.m. Saturday to Friday night. Therecord-online will post any schedule changes as they become available.

“We have practice tomorrow and right after we have to set up those eight mats and get everything ready for the tournament,” Walizer said of the prestigious tournament the Wildcats will host this weekend, “As we go along the intensity level, the conditioning, the positioning has to improve as we go along.”
