Keystone Gets Past Maryland 10-7

key-base-logoBRISTOL, CONN. – It wasn’t pretty but it was a win.

Keystone took a 10-7 win from Maryland champion Hughesville in the first game played today in the Mid-Atlantic championships at Little League’s Breen Field.

The Keystoners never trailed but five pitchers combined to give Hughesville a ton of chances. Keystone manager Ben Falls attributed the walks and a couple defensive misplays to first game jitters at a new tourney at a new site.

But after a slow start Keystone ratcheted up its offense, led by Brady Bendik’s two home runs and a single, good for four RBIs and two runs scored. Bendik’s homer in the top of the sixth followed a monster homer from Kaden Falls and gave Keystone a 10-4 lead. It was a margin they would need when Hughesville rallied for three runs in the bottom of the Inning to make it 10-7 and brought the tying run to the plate with one out.

But Keystone reliever Aidan Major got two groundouts to end the game. The Keystone pitchers only gave up five hits but combined for 12 walks.

Five Maryland pitchers held Keystone to seven hits. A huge early one came from Cy Probst. The game was scoreless in the top of the third when Keystone loaded the bases on walks. Probst hit a high fly to right field. The right fielder lost it in the high sky and Probst ended up on third as three runs scored; two more came across on the first Bendik homer that followed.

Keystone added a single run in the fourth on an RBI single from Cayde McCloskey and another in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Blade Myers. Probst also had a single to go with his triple.

Keystone, now 14-1, will meet Capitol City Monday at 10 a.m. The Washington D.C. team (7-0) had a first round bye.
