Woolrich Late Game Heroics Best Newberry 3-2

wool-base-logoLOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP – The Woolrich Major Baseball All-Stars bounced back strong by edging Newberry 3-2 in a defensive battle in loser’s bracket action Thursday evening.

Woolrich only had two hits on the night in a tight defensive duel but made up for the difference with opportunistic base running to muster the advantage over Newberry.

Brayden Confair scored two of Woolrich’s runs without getting a hit. In the second inning, Confair reached first base successfully beating the throw after a dropped third strike. Confair then advanced around the diamond on three consecutive passed balls to score the first run for Woolrich to knot the score at 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Woolrich was trailing 2-1 when Tyler Weaver got things rolling with a base hit. Then Peyton Newlen got a walk. Then Confair advanced the runners after he was hit by a pitch. Then Newberry walked Lane Porter allowing Woolrich to knot the sore.

Later, Newlen was stranded between third and home for the first out of the inning. Then Jake Walker sacrificed Confair to third to set up the final score. With two outs on the board and the game on the line, Confair got the signal from Woolrich manager, Bill Miller to steal home. Confair was successful and ended the contest with the Woolies earning the 3-2 win.

Peyton Newlen went 5 2/3 innings on the mound for Woolrich giving up 7 hits while recording 9 strikeouts. Tyler Weaver came in to garner the final out against Newberry for another strikeout to preserve the tie and set up the final inning heroics.

Woolrich will now travel to Oval where Nippenose will host the next round to face Loyalsock tomorrow, July 1, 2016 for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
