Words of Grace – May 19, 2016

WordsOfGraceThomas Edison, the famous inventor, said that when he wanted to make a new discovery he would begin by reading up on everything that had been done along the line in the past. He wanted to see what had been accomplished by the labor of others.

His next step was to gather all the data of the many thousands of experiments done by others at great labor and expense. Using all of these experiments as a starting point, he then would go on to make several thousand more.

Sir John Herschel said, “All human discoveries seem to be made only for the purpose of confirming more and more strongly the truths contained in the Holy Scriptures.” That is what R.A. Torrey had in mind when he said, “The greatest discovery I made in life was that God is right when I thought Him to be wrong.”

Jesus told a parable about a “merchant man” who found a “pearl of “great price” (Matthew 13:45, 46). With this parable as his inspiration, Floyd W. Hawkins wrote:

“I’ve found the Pearl of greatest price, Eternal life so fair. It was through the Saviors sacrifice I found this jewel rare . . . It was the greatest of all discoveries when I found Jesus my Lord.”
