Bald Eagles Fall to Edinboro 21-13
Neff Extends Win Streak
LOCK HAVE – The Lock Haven University wrestling team pushed the pace in every match and the Bald Eagles came away with four wins Thursday night, including Dan Neff’s (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) 14th straight, but in the end Edinboro University picked up a hard-fought 21-13 victory over The Haven in an exciting Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) dual.
Along with Neff, Lock Haven (7-9, 2-3 EWL) got wins from Cody Wheeler (Towanda, Pa./Towanda),Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin) and Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown).
Wheeler grinded out a hard-fought 5-3 win at 141 to put the Bald Eagles on the board.
Neff followed it up with his win over Edinboro’s Patricio Lugo, ranked as high as No. 12 in some national polls. Neff dominated Lugo from the opening whistle and took the Fighting Scot down three times in the first period. In the end, Neff won 7-3 and stretched his unbeaten streak to 14 matches.
Neff has not lost since returning to 149 pounds on December 17 (14-0). He was an All-American (8th) at 149 last season.
Wood turned in an outstanding effort at 174, as he drilled Ty Schoffstall for a major, 15-6. Wood racked up 2:24 of riding time.
Wood’s bonus points cut the Edinboro lead to three, 13-10.
Edinboro (8-6, 6-0 EWL) grabbed another win at 184 and stretched the lead back to six,16-10, but again Lock Haven responded.
Sprenkle earned an escape with 20 seconds left in the third period and slipped away with 2-1 victory at 197.
The Fighting Scots led 16-13 heading into the final bout and tacked on a tech fall to close out the match.
A number of Bald Eagles will return to action on Saturday, February 6 at the Edinboro Open.
