LHU Rallies but Falls to Shipp 44-34

lhu-footballSHIPPENSBURG – The Lock Haven University football team rallied late, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to top Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East thriller, as the Red Raiders prevailed for a 44-34 victory.

Lock Haven (0-6, 0-3 PSAC East) and Shippensburg (4-2, 2-1 PSAC East) combined for 1,068 offensive yards and 78 total points.

The Bald Eagles trailed 34-14 at halftime and were down 37-21 after three quarters, but the 13 points in the fourth quarter made a game of it late.

LHU quarterback Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) wide receiver Dan Krupko(Homeworth, Ohio/Urbana University) and defensive back Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) all had historic and career outings for the Lock Haven.

Walton threw for a career-high 370 yards (26-43, 2 INTs) and matched his career-high with four touchdown passes.

Krupko hauled in 11 catches for 214 yards. Three of his 11 catches went for scores.

Miles-Eubanks, LHU’s starting safety finished with a remarkable 18 tackles, including 14 solo stops. The 18 tackles are the fourth-most ever recorded by a Bald Eagle in a single game.

It marked the 11th time in his career that Walton has passed for over 200 yards and it marks the Bald Eagles’ first 300-yard plus passing game since 2004. With his 370 yards and four passing TDs, Walton continued to move up the career lists. He now has 37 career passing touchdowns – the second-most in school history and his 4,671 career passing yards are third-most.

Krupko’s 214 receiving yards are the fifth-most in school history for a single game. It marks Lock Haven’s first 200-yard plus receiver since 1995.

Along with Krupko, David Cook (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) also caught a TD pass. Cook caught his touchdown pass from backup quarterback Shaun Jones (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) as he and Walton lined up on a gadget play early in the fourth quarter. Cook’s score made it 44-28, still in favor of Shippensburg. It was Jones’ first TD pass of the season.

With 3:44 left in the game, Krupko caught his third touchdown pass, which cut the lead to 10 (44-34 Ship). The Bald Eagles recovered an onside kick on the ensuing play, but couldn’t find any points after Shippensburg recorded an interception with 1:06 left in the game.

Cook finished with six catches for 55 yards, while rookie Caleb Kephart (Portage, Pa./Portage) made four catches for 33 yards, and he also grabbed his first career TD-catch. Tight end DelVaughn Dennis (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) followed up last week’s breakout game with five catches for 71 yards.

Miles-Eubanks sparked a tough defensive effort by Lock Haven, and linebacker Tony Ballon (Jersey City, N.J./Harrisburg) also had a fine game, finishing with 14 tackles. Three different Bald Eagles made seven tackles apiece.

Beau Swales (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) carried the ball nine times for 49 yards, which included a 36-yard run on the game’s opening drive.

The Bald Eagles return home next Saturday (October 17) to host Cheyney for their annual Homecoming Game, which kicks off at 2:07 p.m.
