LHU Convocation Marks Beginning of a New Year

lhu-logoLOCK HAVEN – Lock Haven University held its annual Fall Convocation this afternoon signaling the beginning of the 144th academic year. “Founder’s Day Convocation which opens the semester helps us recognize and affirm our rich traditions as well as reaffirm our commitment to our core mission and values,” said Dr. Donna Wilson, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. After welcoming all in attendance, Provost Wilson presented awards, recognizing outstanding faculty members who exemplify the core values of Lock Haven University, acknowledged by their colleagues.
 
Dr. Barrie Overton, biology professor, was awarded the University Award for Outstanding Scholarship. Dr. Overton has co-authored two books. In addition he has led breakthrough research studying White Nose Syndrome in bats. Overton currently has the only chemical control in phase II clinical trials with both FDA and EPA approval to be used as a medicament to alleviate infection of White Nose Syndrome.
 
The University Service Award was presented to Bret Everhart, professor of health and physical education. His extensive service in the community includes five years of partnership development and grant administration with Keystone Central School District and many years of engagement and leadership with area youth sports leagues. Everhart has served as the Vice President of PA State Association for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance and consulted nationally and internationally on learning assessment plans and data management.
 
Dr. Ellen P. O’Hara had the honor of presenting the Peer Choice awards on behalf of the Linda J. Emanuel Teaching and Learning Center. The Peer Choice awards recognize and promote effective college teaching, mentoring, and advising. Among the awards are Excellence in College Pedagogy, Excellence in Mentoring, and Excellence in Advisement.
 
Dr. Eddie Severn, associate professor of visual and performing arts, received the Excellence in College Pedagogy Award.  This award is given to a faculty member who epitomizes the very best in college instruction.
 
The Excellence in Mentoring Award, an award given to a faculty member who is notable for his or her impact upon colleagues’ or students’ personal and professional growth through personal tutoring, counseling, scholarly activity, and a caring attitude, was awarded to Dr. Steven Granich, assistant professor of social work.
 
Dr. Daniel Gales, professor/chair of the health science department, was awarded the Excellence in Advisement Award. This award is given to a faculty member who has made a significant difference in the lives of students, and in their academic choices and career development.
 
The keynote speaker Paul “Babe” Mayer was introduced by Dr. Michael Fiorentino, Jr., President of Lock Haven University. Mayer graduated from Lock Haven University in 1971. He is the operator of Mayer Sports Training Center in Williamsport. In addressing the crowd, Mayer shared that he had two favorite quotes, one from Winston Churchill and one from Abraham Lincoln. He emphasized the quote from Churchill, encouraging all students to be pioneers and, “Never, never, never give up.”
