leg-ba-logo2BEECH CREEK—The Beech Creek Junior Legion baseball team kept its postseason hopes alive with an 8-2 home field win over Mifflinburg Wednesday evening.

Tanner Spangler and Jake Conklin split the mound time for the Junior Crickets, combing on a 9-hitter. The lefty Conklin came on in inning number two and shut down the visitors the remainder of the game to pick up the win.

Beech Creek spotted Mifflinburg two runs in the top of the first but posted four runs in their first at bat and never looked back. Austyn Carson, who had a 3-hit night, started action with a lead-off single. Zach Eck drew a walk and Asher Corl got on base on an error. Ethan Watkins doubled in a run, Mahlik Houtz added a single and A.J. Smith in two runs with a single.

The Junior Crickets plated two more in the fourth, both on passed balls; scoring were Carson who doubled and Eck who picked up another walk. The final two runs scored in the fifth as Evan Prough had a single followed by two walks, a fielder’s choice RBI from Carson and an RBI single from Corl.

In addition to Carson with three hits, Houtz and Prough each had two singles.\

Beech Creek will be back in action Friday against a West Branch League opponent to be determined. At last report Jersey Shore, a State College team and Mifflin County were among the teams still alive in the competition.

Should Beech Creek qualify for the regionals, they would begin Saturday, July 25 at a site to be determined.
