RENOVO — Environmental work is the next phase as activity picks up at the Renovo Industrial Park, what Western Clinton County residents hope will result in a state of the art gas-fired power plant at the old rail yard site.

Site testing began this week at the western end of the industrial park, the park acreage the location for the Renovo Energy Center LLC as proposed by its developers headquartered in Frederick, Maryland.

The proposal was announced in early April and this week is seeing more activity, preliminary work described as “marking and flagging,” part of environmental study efforts. The current activity, authorized by Renovo Energy, is being carried out by Letterle & Associates from Pittsburgh.

A company spokesman said preliminary “geo-physical” work will be conducted this week by a 3-member crew with a larger crew, six or seven, expected on site over the next few weeks for additional environmental borings.

Also due up this week is the start of construction of a weather data tower on site, separate from the environmental work. The tower will gather Department of Environmental Resources required weather data.

Ongoing activity indicates the project continues to move ahead and Clinton County Economic Partnership head Mike Flanagan said, “We are still hopeful that it can be a 2017 project.” He called the current activity part of ongoing due diligence.

Local development officials say the Renovo site provides many positives because of the abundant natural gas and nearby Dominion Transmission and a main electricity transmission line for New York State located on a hill above the Renovo Rail holdings; natural gas-generated electricity would go onto that grid.

Renovo Rail has 57 acres at the site, another 15 owned by Bobby Maguire of McElhattan.
