Wildcat Softball Stunned at Mifflinburg

cm-softballMIFFLINBURG — Central Mountain softball coach Dave Peters warned preseason with a number one state ranking attached to his team, everybody would be looking for the Lady Wildcats.

Central Mountain learned the hard way of what he spoke, the Lady Wildcats stunned 7-6 in their Heartland Conference opener at Mifflinburg on Monday. The loss left CM at 1-1 after a season-opening 5-4 win at Hollidaysburg last Friday.

The Central Mountain defense was the culprit Monday, four errors providing Mifflinburg with six unearned runs. The home team’s only earned run came in the bottom of the sixth after Central Mountain had pulled into a 6-6 with two runs in the top of the sixth.

The loss wasted an 11-hit performance from Central Mountain, led by Mariah Major’s single, homerun and two RBIs. Others with two hits each included Bree Hilty, Madison Brown and Sarah Reeder who had a single and a double.

The loss followed last week’s win at Hollidaysburg. CM was able to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Josie Dershem got her first varsity start and went 2-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and three runs scored. Jess Strouse followed Dershem in the lineup and drove her in twice for 2 RBI and a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Brown also added a pair of hits, going 2-for-3. Hilty added an RBI double, while Emily Strouse and Karli Coleman added singles.

Emily Strouse, pitched well for the first 5 innings. She gave way to Brown in the 6th with a 4-1 lead. Brown cruised through the 6th but ran into a rough patch in the bottom of the 7th giving up back to back singles and then a 2-RBI triple, making the score 5-3. Hollidaysburg chose to bunt to score the runner from 3rd, but then had 2 outs. Brown got a weak grounder for the final out.

Central Mountain (1-1) will be back in action Thursday, another road trip for another Heartland Conference foe in Midd-West High School.
